SVNO: Scajaquada Valley Northern Railway

The Scajaquada Valley Northern is a fictional short line railroad serving remote communities in a Northern and Mountain region in North America. The initial nationality was going to be Canadian, however it could easily be located in the Adirondaks or Northern Maine. The railroad draws a large amount of inspiration from the Ontario Northland Railroad which serves Northern Ontario well, and provides not only the only land link to several Northern Communities which are otherwise inaccessible, but also Whistle Stop / Flag Stop passenger service to remote areas. The Whistle Stop / Flag Stop service is a hold over from the early Steam days when passengers could stop a train anywhere to board or disembark. Read more

WolfRoad creates another amazing image.

Roleplay and Fantasy

I recently commissioned artist WolfRoad to create a new image for my wild wolf character. I first met WolfRoad online, back in 2013. She is a Belrusian artist who shares an affinity for wolves. With her name being essentially similar to my name, it is easy to figure that we took the effort to connect with each other. At the time she only spoke Russian, and I relied on Google Translate to communicate with her. I even began teaching myself Russian to communicate with this wonderful lady. Today, she speaks some english, so communication with her is a tad easier. But when it comes to drawings of my wolf, not much needs to be said. I give her a photograph example of the setting. I tell her basically how I want my wolf positioned in the scene, and leave the rest up to her.

Role-Play and Fantasy

Roleplay and Fantasy

Role-playing (RP) is an active method to tell a fictional story, written by more than one participant in real time. This is an art form, in truth, if done well. Role-playing can improve your typing, and spelling skills, and invigorates your imagination. Some of my earlier experiences with role-playing occurred in the Police and Fire chat rooms on Yahoo! Chat, back in the late 90's. At the same time however, that transitioned to real life, as I eventually formed very close real bonds with some of the special people I had met there.

I sometimes found myself identifying as a wolf online, in any situation where it would seem natural to be one. Typically I would prefer to identify as a natural, wild wolf, and not as a humanized wolf (furry). In other cases I would role-play as famous world leaders, and military generals. My favorite leader to role-play is Catharine the Great, only because she had a bit of naughty side that appealed to me. Not because she was female... In fact that was likely the only case I would role-play as a female. There were times I have role-played as a cougar, but that didn't last long. Lately however, I find it harder and harder to Role-Play as anything other than my human self.

World of Warcraft was a huge portal for role-playing for myself between about 2007 and 2010. Followed by Team Fortress 2 in the following years. In both cases I typically took on my role in game, and rarely strayed from that role. When I began seeking another forum to role-play in, I began exploring post-by-post RP in forums. I also began to join Furry based Facebook groups at the time. But I didn't really like the idea of Role-Playing on Facebook, and turned to my own website, as well as Skype for a while. It wasn't long before I stumbled upon IMVU, and decided to try it out. Within the span of a Month I had a wolf pack set up on IMVU.

I found that I tended to be quite skilled in the art of role-playing, and began to mentor people in the proper way to build and develop a well flowing story. I eventually wrote my 'Fantasy Role Playing 101' Tutorial Series on this blog, in order to help teach people the basic mechanisms of how to be somewhat proficient in the art of Role-Playing.

Some examples of my Role-Playing have been included on this site for registered users to explore. Please note that some of them may be suggestive in nature, while others are fairly tame. The nature of Role-Playing is typically that the stories explore fantasy in some aspect, as such, often role-playing involves suggestive or adult topics.

I have also dabbled in writing stories on my own here and there. Some short stories stem from inspirations from dreams, but other stories stem from inspirations sparked by role-playing or discussions with friends. Roady's Story is a slightly Disney'esque (and safe) story about my wolf character named Roady, and his journey in finding a new pack.

Furry Thoughts

Roleplay and Fantasy

I have been studying the Furry world. I suppose you could say that I have been confused for a while about where exactly I fit in. I know I have a connection to wolves. But how? Am I a Furry? I don't really seem to fit in with most Furries. So I decided to try to figure things out.

I first heard about Furries in 2004 when I met Avatar-X. He is a Furry. He kinda showed me a little glimpse into the world of Furs, and I was intrigued. I had the nick name Roadwolf since the late 90's when I made it as a yahoo chat name. At the time I had over 1000 yahoo chat names, and 'roadwolf' was not my main name. The nick name was then revived in 2000 when a Tow Truck driver referred to me as the Road Wolf on the CB, when I was helping people out in a blizzard on the roads. So I kinda took to the whole furry thing, but didn't really wonder what it was all about, and if I really classified as a furry.

I mostly let the whole Furry thing subside after I moved to Buffalo, and only last year, in 2011 did it get revived, when I met my friend Luna. She is of native heritage and considered herself a cross between a panther and a wolf. I told her about furries and we both figured that we were as such. However upon further soul searching and investigation I have concluded that both of us were in fact otherkins (or perhaps therians -edited Feb. 2014).

An otherkin is more of a spiritual connection to your animal. Where as furries tend to be more of a mask for people to hide behind to allow themselves to come out of a shell and express themselves. Then you have "FurFans" (my own term) who claim to be furries, however they are just interested in the sub culture for the 'art', sexual aspects, or as a way to get around age barriers. Fur Fans are often younger furs who often populate Furry communities, and sometimes claim to be older then they actually are. Their only real motivation for being Furry is the art, which is often seductive in nature, and 'yiffing' which is a furry term for basically engaging in sexual roleplaying.

Fur Fans are a problem in the furry community, and one which has caused people serious legal problems as well. I interviewed about 300 'Furries' in my investigation to try to figure out the differences, and a few older adults, did mention that they have had legal issues in the past after having inapproperate relations with teenage furries who were not always truthful about their age. This is a problem, since the online Furry community tends to be filled with furries who stay in character. They refuse to bring their real lives into the furry community, so they act out as their fursona, and are generally carefree and trusting of their partner. Real life questions seem to be rarely asked, or are often seen as taboo in an roleplaying environment. Fur Fans never engage nor show any interest in fur suiting. They also tend to be more aligned with the Anime sub-culture.

I have extracted myself from randomly roleplaying now, after having a few close calls myself. I prefer to actually get to know people now, both in a real life sense, and a roleplaying sense.

True furries however, are not sex addicts. Sure sex plays a role in the culture, as it does in every aspect of life, no matter how much we try to brush it off. And much of the art depicts peoples characters in sexy or revealing poses... Why? Well why does Hollywood put their sexiest people in the limelight? People want to feel good about themselves, and while I bet many furries are a little overweight and geeky, they like to have an alternate personality to escape to which might be more attractive.

I did get a commission (drawing of myself in wolf form) done for myself a while back. Sure it was naked... But it was natural. I was chubby and not exactly a super star in the drawing, which is how I wanted it. However the drawing looked a little too human for my tastes (I still haven't paid the artist, tho I feel bad about that, but it wasn't quite was I was hoping for, and she did tend to make payment more difficult by refusing paypal). I have no problem sharing who I am. I am quite open and revealing, and need no such mask to hide behind to express myself.

True furries also tend to be anthropomorphic in that their 'fursonas' tend to have human features or abilities, or even special abilities or the ability to transform. They tend to utilize their furry selves to return to a, sometimes, innocent child like state, with no cares except having fun and playing. Most will engage in baby like talk, mewing or petting, as a form of displaying how cute they can be. A large portion of true furries are also gay. I believe this is related to the stress of living two lives. One trying to hide your nature from your parents, and your social life, which is your true desire. I believe that being furry is a kind of middle ground, which maybe allows both lives to converge in a 3rd lifestye which, while strange to some, is often easier to accept for the parents. Not all true furries engage in fursuiting, but most will desire to, or have a partial suit or mask. This is not how I see myself.

Otherkins are more spiritual. Often believing that they are reincarnated from their previous phenotype or animal. They are often much more connected to the feral or wild versions of the animal, and often have some native or pagan backgrounds. This began to seem like it was more of what I am. My connection with wolves is fairly strong. When I roleplay as a wolf, or write about wolves, I write as a wild, feral wolf. I prefer not to talk, but rather act and react with body language. I do not have human features, when I close my eyes and envision my wolven self, I am just a wolf. In a roleplaying sense I usually seek adventure, and conflict. My favorite roleplaying situation is a random meeting of two fairly well matched animals. The territory disputes and conflict between two wild animals can make for a very exciting story and plot. Sometimes this will turn sexual as one animal eventually submits, but it could just as easily end in death to one animal too.

I recently met an otherkin, and our conversation basically embedded in me my theory that I was in fact an otherkin. Otherkins are rarer, and not as well known as furries, so I doubt I will find many others like me out there. But I did enjoy talking to Emely, and I do hope she does message me sometime.

I also met another furry, (or I am pretty sure she is more correctly termed as an Otherkin), who is from Belarus. She mainly just speaks Russian, and communicating with her has been interesting. Her characters name is WolfRoad, or RoadWolf in English. Her story is also fairly interesting. A rocker who enjoys motorcycles, collecting hides, and bones, and drawing wolves. A prime example of her work is here (Alone by WolfRoad):

I really do love her art, and I know she has physical art for sale. I so badly wish to collect some of her work. I also do want her to do a few commissions for me. If you wanted any gift ideas for me, this is always a wonderful idea. Her art is beautiful, and I do wish to support her as much as I can. Read more

Freefall!

Blog and Journal Roleplay and Fantasy

I must suggest a very cool web comic to anyone who has an interest in technology, science, or whom is a furry.

Freefall is a story of Sam Starfall, an alien squid-like creature who is a failed space ship captain. Lazy, and of a criminal background, he schemes his way into becoming the 'owner' of a genetically modified wolf/human, which becomes his new ship Engineer. Florence Ambrose, the wolf, or DOGGY as the robots call her, is genetically programmed to be honest, and obey orders. Her and Sam Starfall couldn't be further from being polar opposites. However that being said, they each find each others abilities useful at times, especially once Florence uncovers some serious global problems and goes on a mission to solve them.

The web comic is updated 3 times a week.

This is the start: http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff100/fv00001.htm

It eventually is converted into color.

Fantasy Roleplaying 101

Roleplay and Fantasy

Some may find it strange that I delve into fantasy roleplaying from time to time. Personally, I find it very theraputic and relaxing. The use of imagination and creative writing skills, combines in a perfect roleplaying scenario, to create a dynamic flowing storyline between two or more people. While I have roleplayed with people who have no experience doing so, and it still ends up being fun. Often the experience is much more enjoyable of the other person knows a little about roleplaying and its associated rules. I will attempt to delve into some of the basics here on this post. Keep in mind this is about text-based role playing. So let us begin... Read more

Pretty strange dream!

Roleplay and Fantasy Gaming Blog and Journal

From what I remember it begun inside a video game. I was a player, in a 3 player video game which was kind of like a mix up between WoW and The Sims. There were huge jellyfish like things that we needed to attack, and they shot back at us. After we killed that, we continued to the next story which involved myself fighting a bear in hand to paw combat. The bear eventually said, "aww enough with this", and kinda rolled over pretending to play dead. Then I spoke to a flamboyant looking parrot bird, who I was able to trick that a string of Christmas lights was actually a steel chain which he wanted.

After a bit of random game type stuff, the dream changed to myself being a kid in a mansion in Richmond Hill, Ontario. It was high up on a hilltop, and I recall that my parents were not exactly in the best relationship. My dad often didn't care what was going on, he was too concerned with his Science related work (Aperture Science?). Apparently there was a play being set up to be preformed inside out house for my young sister. I was kicked out of the house along with my other sister, and so we sat in the driveway. The members for the play arrived and we were less then helpful.

We then took some vehicle to a large tower overlooking the CN York Sub, which apparently was 3 lines instead of 2 lines. From the tower I saw a UP train heading west on the nearest track. It was interesting in that the lead engine was a SD90MAC, and the following engine was one of their gas turbines followed by a fuel tender, and a few other engines. The train was actually short, made up of a string of about 40 brand new empty Coalveyor Bathtub Gondolas, but at the end of the train there were two interesting cars. A Hamilton Fire Box 43 support car (Hi Chris!), and an MKT green Inspection Car converted from a boxcar, exactly like pictured in this months Model Railroader.

Just after the 2 cars passed the observation tower, they derailed. the train kept going however, but these cars were being pulled along the railroad ties and scraping against the cement retaining wall that sided along the tracks. Some people got on their cell phones (to call 911), but I raced down the long stairs to my Jeep (apparently I was more grown up now?). At the bottom, with the intention of chasing after the train, I got distracted by a Park Ranger who was handing out small objects which had steel wool, gunpowder and foam mixed in them. apparently if you squeeze it, it makes smoke and scares away bears and predators. I grabbed a bunch and started playing!

Soon I was lighting these things off left right and center, and I found out that if you use a battery on them instead of squeezing them, they actually erupt in a shower of silver sparks while they burn.

For some reason the contents of my Jeep was all over the grass now, and it was night time. I began cleaning up the jeep and enlisted the help of a few friends to scower the lawn to look for stuff. That is where the dream ended.

It seems a lot of it was made up of recent games I have played, along with recent books and images I have seen. Kind of funny how the brain can put all of that together on the fly. Read more

Drawing and Furries... [NSFW]

Roleplay and Fantasy

Originally posted on December 11, 2008: Sadly I can't draw. Well I can draw as long as it involves blueprints and straight lines and such. Some would say I am a furry... I don't think I truly am. I mean I do not go and dress up and attend furry conventions. However I will admit one thing, and that is I do sometimes RP as a wolf online. Also, one of my favorite drawings is a drawing by Wookiee... I know it is a bit graphic. But I love it... And I would love to draw something similar for my avatar. But I do not really think I have the talent to draw so well :( Idealy I would like a drawn avatar of myself in furry form. Just a headshot or something. And then a nice full sized drawing of myself in furry form. Likely in a wooded area, perhaps in a quiet northern spring, beside the water, or on the rocky shore of a lake with a nice full moon behind a few clouds for a dramatic sky. I visualize my 'furry form' as being a gray/brown wolf. I would likely be a little more grey now then brown, and likely have some white highlights as I am getting a little older. I have thick hair around my head, like a lions main. I am a large full figured wolf, however not overly visibly muscular. More soft and noble looking. And my expression curious or content (relaxed). Honestly, as a bonus, I would love to re-create that Wookiee photo above with my furry image as the male, and another female wolf or fox, but maintaining the same general lines and similar setting.
